Play SuperEnalotto While Visiting Italy
If you are a non-Italian citizen visiting Italy, you can participate in SuperEnalotto by buying a ticket from an authorised retailer. Anyone above the age of 18 can buy SuperEnalotto tickets from retailers in Italy, regardless of their nationality or citizenship.
Italy enjoyed a boom in “lottery tourism” in 2009, when the SuperEnalotto jackpot exceeded €130 million. Mainland Europeans crossed the border in droves to purchase tickets for the 13th August draw. German newspaper Bild held a telephone competition, in which 140 people won a day-trip to Milan on a chartered flight for the express purpose of purchasing tickets for the record SuperEnalotto draw. Though no one won the jackpot on that day, it is still common for tourists and citizens of bordering countries to try their luck with SuperEnalotto.
The downside of purchasing a ticket in Italy is that any winnings from that ticket must also be collected in Italy. You cannot claim a SuperEnalotto prize from abroad; instead, you have to claim your prize in person from either a ticket retailer in Italy, one of the lottery operator’s regional offices, or one of the dedicated payment centres.
Buy SuperEnalotto Tickets From Abroad
If you don’t have any plans to visit Italy soon, but would still like to purchase tickets for SuperEnalotto, you can do so with a lottery concierge service. Lottery concierges employ local agents to purchase tickets in person on your behalf. You play just like any other lottery, but with the concierge acting as a middle-man – allowing you to receive international prizes without the cost of a flight.
Most concierge services do not take commissions on any winnings incurred by a ticket bought through them. In the case of a jackpot, some may even fly you out at their expense to collect the winnings. One such high-profile international winner was a Latvian player, who played a system entry through a concierge in 2013. He won prizes with 74 lines, winning a total of more than €500,000 as a result.
Participate in SuperEnalotto Online
If the idea of having to travel for your jackpot does not appeal to you, then you could instead choose your entries online. Your entries would be kept safe in an online account, with no chance of your numbers getting lost in the process. You could also set up subscriptions, meaning you wouldn’t miss a draw. Winnings would be automatically paid into your account as well, so you’d never miss out on a prize. Even if you won a jackpot, you wouldn’t be required to collect any prizes in person.
Are Winnings from Non-Residents’ SuperEnalotto Tickets Taxed?
Italy is one of only a few European countries to tax lottery winnings – though the amount differs from lottery to lottery. In the case of SuperEnalotto, any winnings above €500 from tickets purchased in Italy are subject to 12% tax. This tax rate is imposed regardless of the citizenship of the player – meaning your winnings would be taxed if you purchased a winning ticket in Italy, or enlisted a concierge to buy a ticket on your behalf.
It is important to note that any winnings you receive may also be subject to taxation in your own country. Revenue laws differ from country to country, but it is recommended that you at least declare your winnings in your tax return. In the event of winning a jackpot from another country, it is highly recommended that you contact a financial adviser to ensure your winnings are protected, declared and taxed in the correct way. Lastly, if you intend to participate online, you are still bound by the laws of the country in which you reside. In some countries, participating online is illegal, so be sure that you are legally eligible to participate before continuing.
